5 years after Sandusky's arrest, Penn State is still (and always will) feeling the effects of the scandal that took place behind closed doors.
Last week, the U.S Department of Education released that the university was fined $2.4 billion for failing to comply with the Clery Act of 1990. They released a 240-page report on findings of the department’s five-year investigation after the child sex abuse case gained public attention in 2011. The university had violated the reporting rules for multiple criminal events during the 14-year period.
Penn State continually takes blows, such as this one, and recovers with flying colors, until they take another hit. Will the constant roller coaster end?
Penn State is a terrific school, one of the best schools ranked academically in the country. The Sandusky scandal has nothing to do with those who attend the school today nor does it have anything to do with the football program today. Yet, the university will always receive constant blows from the scandal for as long as time can tell. It'd be nice to say that once a century or so passes, all will forget but that is untrue. Someone will always bring up Sandusky.
Being a current student, it makes me ill when someone makes a comment about the scandal at me when it has nothing to do with me or my studies here. I was not around during that time, many students currently attending were not either. Those who were around have graduated and moved on to bigger and better things. Even when sports media outlets talk about our football team on social media, scrolling through the few sickening comments boils my blood.
It's sad that the events that took place those many years ago will always haunt the university but I know many students and staff, including myself, will always remain Penn State proud through thick and thin.
