After being at Samford for just a few months, there are words that become common nature to students that might not make sense to outsiders. Nobody outside of Samford's community would understand you if you said "Let's meet in Ben Brown after CP and then go to the Caf." Here's a list of the most used slang by Samford students.

1. Ben Brown

This is the meeting place for everything on campus.

Friend: Wanna skip class and hang out in Ben Brown?

Me: Heck ya everyone will be there.

2. The Quad

This is where tailgating happens for Saturday football in the fall and where students like to sit on picnic blankets. On beautiful days it becomes the picture of college.

Me: Do y'all wanna play spike ball out on the quad?

3. The Front Lawn

There are many myths about why this grass is always green. In the middle of the Stage 4 drought, it was bright green. In the dead of winter, it was bright green. It never fades or gets brown and is always being watered.

*asks formal dates, tour guides, and bio professors why grass is so green*

4. CA, CP, & BP

Communication Arts, Cultural Perspectives, and Biblical Perspectives (not Beer Pong) are required classes that every Samford student takes. Everyone hates them, but we all suffer through together.

*sitting in CP* How does this relate to my major?

5. The Hub

This is where you turn when you have any questions about Samford, Birmingham, or life in general.

*calls HUB at 2am*

Me: What are the three states that aren't represented at Samford?

HUB: Uhhhh I' don't know the answer, but I can give you my guesses.

6. The Caf

The place you come to not really eat, but to instead hang out with your friends. Two hours have passed and you find yourself still sitting with your friends.

*gets ice cream and leaves*

7. Caf Date

Sometimes your life is crazy and the only time you can catch up with your friends is during a meal since everyone has to eat. Or you may just want to hang out with friends for a subpar meal.

Friend: I haven't seen you in forever! Let's go on a caf date soon.

8. Eno Village

The place outside of Vail Hall where you can find enos of every color swaying in the breeze on a beautiful Birmingham day.

Friend: Wanna meet up in Eno Village after class?

9. Princess Parking

The parking spots in the very front of Vail and Smith. Once you get a spot in princess parking, you don't move your car for a good week.

Someone in your car: Oh my gosh there's princess parking!

*drives as fast as you can to get that spot before someone else does*

10. Frat Lap

This is when you and all of your friends pile into a car with the music blasting. You are also probably screaming trying to get the boys' attention.

Friend: Y'all let's go take a frat lap tonight when we get back to campus.

11. Banner Drop

A night where all Samford students gather in the Wright Center to see the fake themes for Step Sing be presented.

*everyone after Banner Drop*

Friend: Wait is your theme superheros? No, I bet its scientists!

12. Step Sing

This is epic singing and dancing in the Wright Center that takes over campus. If you haven't seen it look it up on YouTube right now.

Friend not in Step Sing: Hey what are you doing this weekend?

Me: Oh ya know Step Sing, Step Sing, and more Step Sing.

13. Step Sing Plague

The sickness that takes over campus the day after Step Sing. Throughout that next week the number of people in your classes gets smaller and smaller.

*sanitizes everything around you and drinks Vitamin C for the week after Step Sing*

14. The Ratio

For every 3 girls there is 1 boy at Samford. This means the majority of your classes are girls and depending on your major, your class could be all girls.

*walks into class on the first and realizes it's all girls*

15. Ring By Spring

For some reason by the spring semester of senior year, most of the girls get engaged. Nobody knows why this happens but it does.

When you are happy for all your friends that are engaged, but you're still suffering from the ratio and you know ring by spring won't happen for you.

16. Lib

This is what we call the Goodwin Davis Library. It is a place where you go to get Einstein's and hang out with your friends. Only during midterms and finals is it filled with people actually studying.

*goes to the lib to see who you can hang out with and interrupt*

17. Beeson

There are so many different places that we are named after Beeson. The Mr. Beeson statue. Beeson Woods. Dwight Beeson Hall. Orlean Beeson School of Education. Beeson Divinity School.

Friend: Hey meet me at Beeson.

Me: *wonders which Beeson they are talking about*

18. Ruff Em/Bow Wow Bulldogs

These are captions you will see on instagram and hashtags on Twitter that students use to show support for our beloved Bulldogs.

*goes to tailgate and leaves 5 minutes into the first quarter*

Instagram Caption: bow wow bulldogs had so much fun at the game

19. SAM.

(pronounced SAM - DOT) This is the new logo for Samford athletics and can be seen on countless shirts, hats, backpacks, and other apparel. It was made famous in Crossover's 2017 Step Sing show.

Friend: lol did you see the dot come out during Crossover's Step Sing show??

20. Orientation Leaders and SRT

Getting to be an Orientation Leader or on Student Recruitment Team is a something that almost every student at Samford wants to do. It is hard to get selected to be a part of either one but they are so fun and rewarding and they come with a ton of free Samford clothes.

*sees your tour guide from your visit on campus*

Me to my friend: omg they're the reason I came to Samford

*sees any orientation leader*

Friend to me: *acts like they've just seen a famous person* do you remember when they sang at karaoke night?

Special thanks to Catherine Donnelly, Anna Ruth Waters, and everyone else who helped me define these fun Samford words!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
