Your First Step Sing Experience As Told By "Friends"

At Samford, Step Sing season has just begun. After 6 p.m., you won't find anyone in their dorm or at the "caf," because almost everyone is at practice. Step Sing is a Samford-wide tradition that dates back to 1951 when Samford was called Howard College. For those who haven't heard of Step Sing, it's a show that, you guessed it, consists of dancing and singing.

Different organizations and groups have their own show (like sororities, fraternities, the school of the arts, independents, etc.). They only have two and a half weeks to learn all songs and dances, which makes it even more exciting. As a freshman, it is pretty overwhelming at first, but it's also so much fun meeting and getting to know more people. Here are some thoughts a freshman might have about their first Step Sing experience:

Getting the email about getting in a show

Looking at the practice times

The very first practice

Watching all the banners drop

Learning the music when you don't know how to sing

Learning the music when you do know how to sing

Trying to figure out all the other show themes

Trying to catch up on sleep on the weekend

Learning the dances when you can't dance

Learning the dances when you can dance

Trying to stuff yourself with food before practice so you won't get hungry during

When all the songs get stuck in your head
