The Christian life can feel difficult and overwhelming. The pressure to give into sin can be enormous at times, with our own misplaced desires pushing our thoughts and actions towards that which we know will bring us nothing but sorrow. The guilt and shame from such sin can be overwhelming, leading us into more despair and agony. We are left to wonder, “Then who can be saved?” (Luke 18:26).
It is in this very mindset of heart and soul that we are able to approach Christ. Christ says:
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30).
We know we are broken, and the One who can heal our brokenness of mind, body, and soul is Christ, the One Who Is, the One who hung upon a tree and has conquered sin and death on our behalf. “For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15). He made Himself weak, and having dwelt in the likeness of men, became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. He loves us more than we know how to love. As the hymns of the Church testify:
I have run to the fragrance of your myrrh, O Christ God,
For I have been wounded by your love
do not part from me, O heavenly Bridegroom. (Wounded By Love, St. Porphyrios).
Christ will heal us, often in ways we do not expect. But they are ways much better than we could have imagined.
Go to confession. Receive Holy Communion. Pray. Fast. This is the path to salvation.
