Saint Mary's, We Need To Talk About Our Eating Habits

Saint Mary's, We Need To Talk About Our Eating Habits

I have only been at Saint Mary's for six months, and to exaggerate it, there is really nothing to eat here. Sure there is pizza and the pasta station that sometimes serves wraps, a sandwich station, a grill, salad bar, main station, etc. Cyber Cafe sells a lot of items you could get at a fast food restaurant and your I.D. will buy you Jimmy John's and Papa John's...but is it really good for us?

I repeatedly feel like crap after eating in the dining hall, so I just decide to get grilled chicken...all of the time. And a lot of the time, that chicken was pink.

The workers from Sodexo that work in the dining hall are very nice, but in a recent article discussing the health of the brand, they received an overall grade F.

Before you attack me and say that not everything read on the internet is true, the facts of the article were approved by a doctor. Granted that doesn't make it 100% true, it's still pretty plausible. In addressing the food that Sodexo serves, the article states that a long term side effect is "obesity" and an ingredient to be aware of is "unknown processing chemicals." Normally I'm not a health freak, but when your school leaves you no other option you start to get concerned.

Saint Mary's requires every student to have some sort of meal plan, regardless of their living or financial situation. I have the lowest meal plan an on-campus student can have, and still, I don't use it. The food in the dining hall makes my stomach upset (also stated in the article that this is a "possible side effect") and Cyber Cafe isn't necessarily the healthiest option - not to mention the rumors of employees being unsanitary.

While an I.D. will get you Jimmy John's and Papa John's, you only have so much "munch money" on your I.D. and buying anything off campus is a huge hit to your limited amount of it.

If you're going to suggest cooking meals, we are only allowed to have a mini fridge (three feet maximum, maybe) and it's hard to find time and patience to cook for yourself in your schedule. Working is tough to balance being a full-time college student, most students don't have a car to leave campus, and our parents don't want to keep transferring money into our bank accounts. That sort of eliminates grocery shopping.

So not only do most girls not eat healthy, but most don't eat at all. Skipping meals or only going to one meal a day is, unfortunately, common at Saint Mary's, and it shouldn't be. Saint Mary's is a great school which focuses on student health and loving your body (as this past week was Love Your Body week), but we can't love our bodies if we don't love what we're putting into it.

With the majority of options being fast food, junk food, or loaded with fats and carbohydrates, I can't help but think there must be a better option for Saint Mary's. Until then,

Or maybe I just won't eat. I don't know Saint Mary's, you tell me.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
