According to an article published by Mental Floss, the world's first cat cafe opened in 1998 in Taipei, Taiwan. Since then, cat cafes have started showing up all over the world, from Japan to the U.K. The cat cafe craze came to the United States in April 2014, when a temporary pop-up sponsored by Purina ONE opened in New York City. That same year, the first permanent cat cafe opened in California: Cat Town Cafe in Oakland. The cat cafe scene in the U.S. is now from coast to coast, and Saint Louis is pouncing on top of this new trend. These cafes are great additions to any city, especially for apartment-renting cat lovers that don't want to break their leases.

Saint Louis's cat cafe, aptly named MAUHAUS Cat Cafe and Lounge, is opening this year, according to their website. However, a specific date has not been released yet. The cafe is partnering with Tenth Life, a rescue organization in Saint Louis for cats and cats alone. According to an article published on cattime.com, each cat used at MAUHAUS will spend some time in a foster home to make sure they are friendly felines before they become regulars at the cafe. All of the cats at MAUHAUS are also up for adoption, a great perk for anyone interested in adding a cat to their family after their visit.

The owners of MAUHAUS hosted a pop-up event last August with a great response, according to their blog. There was a successful adoption at the pop-up and the cafe introduced its custom tea, MAUHAUS no6, to the public.
