College is the time in a young person's life where they should be able to go out and have fun and get to learn about themselves and the people around them. Unfortunately, college is also a time where sometimes, having too much fun can lead to scary and unwanted situations to arise. According to statistics posted by NSVRC Sexual Awareness, it was reported that for every 1,000 women member of a college, at least 35 of them will report a rape within the year. Out of those 35, less than five percent will report the rape to authorities.
With these scary statistics, it makes me wonder why more girls and boys alike are not reporting their rapes to authorities. In recent months, a bill has been signed into congress called the Safe Campus Act. The act states that it hopes to help protect victims of sexual assault and to improve adjudication and allegations to sexual violence. However, many survivors of sexual assault are attacking the bill, saying that it is not holding the schools responsible for these acts and how they do not hold the rapist accountable for their actions. In the past weeks, many Greek organizations have stepped up and withdrew their support for the bill as well. The Gamma Rho chapter of Alpha Phi at Penn State was the first to withdraw, saying that they "do not outright oppose the bill, but feel that each individual should have his or her voice heard."
After being in college for almost three years and hearing stories of girls and boys alike being sexually assaulted, I feel like it is the school's duty to punish the abuser and not leave the victim in the dark. Too many times have the victims been blamed for the incident, where it really should be the other way around. Victims of sexual assault should be able to be open about what happened to them and have their abuser be put to justice. It is sad to see that a bill that basically wants to silence the victims are still being put into effect. With your help, though, we can oppose the bill and revise it, making it so that authorities and the school are aware of such happenings and can effectively punish the abuser for their actions.
