Welcome To The "Netflix and Chill" Generation

Could this be the end of dating?

Welcome To The "Netflix and Chill" Generation

Every generation has had its own version of dating. In recent years, dating has taken a turn for the worse. In fact, dating almost feels non-existent. That only applies if you define dating the way it should be defined: two people who spend time together and get to know each other.

Most recently, a terrible thing has been growing more and more popular: "Netflix and chill." WTH l is "Netflix and chill?" Some use this as a replacement for dating, of which this generation has forgotten the fundamentals.

Here are 10 things that have been lost with the “Netflix and chill” generation:

1. Communication

We don’t know how to communicate anymore. No one likes confrontation, but when you are at risk of losing something that is important to you, communication is key.

2. Dancing, NOT grinding

I know this one is silly, but seriously, the only time girls and guys really dance with each other is when they’re forced to at a school dance of some sort. Slow-dancing is romantic, guys.

3. Being asked on a date

There is really no such thing as dating anymore. And if for some odd reason you are asked on a date, it is the most awkward and nerve-racking thing ever. Nowadays, it's more common for you to just “hang out” whenever it is convenient, and then one day (if it all works out), you are magically a couple, all without a single date.

4. Being with each other without your phones being involved

This also applies to laptops and all other forms of communication. What is so difficult about disconnecting from the outside world for an hour and just being with each other? If you are with someone who spends all his or her time texting or browsing social media, it can get extremely frustrating, and you feel as if you are talking to yourself at times.

5. Getting dressed up for dates

If your dates are comprised of Netflix and chilling, odds are you aren’t dressing up beyond yoga pants and a hoodie. You shouldn’t HAVE to dress up for a date, but you should be excited and want to look nice. What ever happened to spending hours before a date going through all of your outfits?

6. Actually having a label

Well we’re kinda dating. We're together. We’re talking. We’re more than friends. Just label it. It isn’t that hard. You shouldn’t be afraid of labels; you should want them.

7. Kind gestures

Open the car door for her. Hold open the door for them instead of dropping it on them. Offer them your jacket if they are cold. I know this seems like it isn’t important, but sometimes the small things show your affection more than words ever will.

8. Really getting to know one another

Over time you of course will get to know one another. But there was a time when you spent time together, learning about each other, before dating. Nowadays, unless you play a sick game of 20 Questions, you most likely don’t take as much time as you should learning about each other.

9. Being spontaneous

There’s not much that is spontaneous about watching Netflix all the time. Take a random trip to the zoo. Go see the next movie playing. Take a random trip. Just go out and do something out of the ordinary together.

10. Waiting until the time is right

Everything is rushed for this generation. Everyone lives a fast-paced life. Sometimes couples don’t take the proper amount of time to get to know one another before dating. Sometimes they just go through the motions and don’t take the time and enjoy experiencing new things together and getting to know one another. Sex has even become something that is expected in a relationship and not as special as it should be. Wait for the right time. It will be worth it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
