Ten Poems by Rupi Kaur Everyone Needs to Read
Ben Shannon

Have you ever scrolled through social media to realize it was a national holiday you’ve never heard of before? I found out October 6th, 2016 is National Poetry Day, so here we are celebrating a day neither of knew existed. What’s better than to read 10 of the most influential poems by Rupi Kaur?

Who’s Rupi Kaur?! Rupi is a contemporary poet, from Canada. Originally born in Punjab, India she moved to Canada with her mother at 3-years-old. She started writing after taking a creative writing course at her University. Rupi Kaur’s writing reflects the work of her inspirations Warsan Shire, and Nayyirah Waheed.

Rupi Kaur published her first book, Milk and Honey November 4th, 2014. This book is divided into four chapters that focus on specific topics. Kaur’s poems allow you to feel joy, grief, inspiration, relief, and happiness. Her poems allow you to release all those feelings and emotions you didn’t even know you had locked up inside of you.

Let’s get started.

1. The poem that inspired me.

2. The poem that gave me goosebumps.

3. The poem that taught me something I never learned.

4. The poem I needed when my heart was broken.

5. The poem I wish I could share with the person who broke my heart.

6. The poem that inspires me to keep trying.

7. The poem I needed in high school.

8. The poem that helped me discover myself.

9. The poem that empowered me.

10. The poem that everyone needs.

While I sat in my room reading these poems for the first time, I was left in an indescribable state. I didn’t know how I felt, but all I knew is Rupi Kaur’s poems gave me a sense of peace. Rupi Kaur’s poems allow you to feel feelings you didn’t know you had. If you’d like to know more about this inspirational 23-year-old, read her book, Milk, and Honey, on a rainy Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea, and allow yourself to get lost in her words.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
