Running Start is a program for high school students offered in Washington State and Hawaii. Juniors and seniors are given the opportunity to attend community or technical college — earning both high school and college credit.
The best part? College classes are free.
As a Running Start graduate, I've had the opportunity to bring the college credit I earned with me to my university. However, I have received infinite comments about my program.
1. Didn't you miss out on your high school experience?
Running Start students were some of the most involved students at my high school. Several students took part-time community college classes while also attending high school. Also, students were involved in sports and clubs to take advantage of the high school experience.
2. You're still just a freshman
I graduated high school with a direct transfer Associate of Arts degree, which is equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor's degree.
When I started attending university, I was already junior standing.
When my peers asked my class standing and I explained my situation, they would not consider me a true "junior."
While I did lack the experience of the introductory classes at a university, I still had two years of full-time college under my belt.
3. Well, I took Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate/have 5 college credits
I'm happy for other students who have taken opportunities to advance and get ahead in high school.
But comparing taking one or two AP classes to taking two full years of college is like comparing apples to oranges.
4. But you're so young!
Yes, I am fully aware of my age. Yes, I realize that I'm graduating two years early. No, that does not make me less capable or less knowledgeable.
5. Won't you miss college?
Of course, I will miss college. But, saving thousands of dollars and jumping into my career early will make my time spent in University short and sweet.
