Chitown was a rugby town during the first weekend in November. The USA Eagles faced off against the New Zealand Maori All Blacks at Toyota Park on Friday, November 4, 2016. Then the fun continued on Saturday, November 5, 2016, when the New Zealand All Blacks took on the Irish Rugby Football Union.
The weekend started with the USA Eagles taking on the New Zealand Maori All Blacks in front of a crowd of 18,007 people. The Eagles came into the match as underdogs and sure looked like it to. The Maori All Blacks took it to the Eagles, it wasn't even close. They flexed their muscles early and never stopped flexing. They went on to score a whopping 54 points compared to USA's 7 points. Although the Eagles were beaten, battered, and bruised during the game, it was still a good learning experience for the team.
The 2016 Rugby Weekend wasn't done after Friday, as the New Zealand All Blacks would take on the Irish Rugby Football Union at Soldier Field. The two teams played in front a record-setting 62,300 people, the highest attendance ever for a rugby match in the United States. Ireland came into the match as the underdog but left as victors. The Irish came out to play on Saturday, hoping to gain their first win over the All Blacks in history. Ireland played a great first half and took a nice 25-8 lead into half time. The Irish would continue to run up the score on the All Blacks, scoring another try and making the score 30-8. With New Zealand down by 22, they looked to be down, dead, and out of the match, but they didn't give up. The All Blacks stormed back and cut the lead to 30-22. They would keep fighting but would keep falling short as the closest they got to a tie was 33-29. Ireland would go on to score another try and conversion before the game, leading to the 40-29 final score. This was the first win that the Irish have ever gotten over the All Blacks, over 111 years in the waiting. Congratulations to the Irish Rugby Football Union and their fans on their first ever win over the New Zealand All Blacks!
