As of Thursday, April 19, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani confirmed, in an interview with The Washington Post, that he is joining President Donald Trump’s legal team.
The Daily Beast first reported Thursday afternoon that Giuliani had been “in talks” to join the President’s personal legal team, but the story was not confirmed until later that day.
While Giuliani claims his role will be “limited,” his overall goal is to bring the Russia probe to a close, working closely with Trump’s current attorney Jay Sekulow.
In response to this announcement, President Trump said, “Rudy is great. He has been my friend for a long time and wants to get this matter quickly resolved for the good of the country.”
After not being able to find any lawyer to serve on his legal team, Trump’s established friendship with Giuliani will only work in his favor. After all, Giuliani is convinced there is no evidence of collusion between the 2016 Trump presidential campaign and the Russian government.
Thus, his motive to quickly finalize the investigation is not unbiased.
Whether or not Trump and his campaign staff and advisors committed any crimes, Russia’s interference in the 2016 election should move both the president and his attorneys to uncover the truth and not rush Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his ongoing investigation.
