Over the past few weeks, "Orange Is the New Black" has hit an all time high, and it’s not just because of the intense new season filled with drugs, sex, and good old-fashioned girl prison drama. Although the past two seasons of OITNB have done extremely well, this season has set the bar even higher for the seasons to come, and it’s all because of one reason, and one reason alone. Repeat after me: Ruby. Freakin. Rose.
Season three of OINTB has fans addicted because of a new character, Stella, played by an Australian goddess named Ruby Rose. But what is it about the 29 year old actress that has fans drooling?
Well, for one, she has this edgy look going for her that isn’t traditionally the billboard picture for a “hot” girl. She has tattoos all over her body, with short hair, and a kick ass body. But she’s not stereotypically pretty, which is why she’s such a big deal. People are attracted to the “bad girl” thing she’s got going on. She’s not your stereotypical long hair, long legs traditional kind of girl. She’s seen kissing girls and smoking cigarettes on the show, and that appeal has people melting. Also, it turns out that badass look has a badass girl underneath.
Ruby Rose has come out as gender fluid, and is very proudly engaged to Phoebe Dahl. In a recent interview, Ruby broke down what being gender fluid means, and said, "I'm somewhere in the middle, which -- in my perfect imagination -- is like having the best of both sexes. I have a lot of characteristics that would normally be present in a guy and then less that would be present in a woman. But then sometimes I'll put on a skirt -- like today."
So why is she such a big deal?
Because we as a society are moving on. We are accepting people by who they want to be, not just by what they are told to be. We are no longer obsessed with the same kind of people. We don't mind girls kissing on TV and we think tattoos are cool. We are even calling unique looking people "hot." We are no longer judging people just by their appearance; we are getting to know what's underneath. We are progressing. And Ruby and her kick ass personality are helping us move right along.
As Ruby quotes in another interview, "The takeaway is that only you know who you were born to be, and you need to be free to be that person." Damn right, girl.
