The new Netflix show called “On My Block,” has been a secret success for the video streaming site. The show has received great reviews from websites like “Buzzfeed,” and “Vulture,” and after its release, #OnMyBlock was very popular on Twitter. One of the things that make the show so interesting is the use of a very diverse cast. But not only is the cast diverse, the acting that is being displayed by this strong, young, cast, is superb. When I happened to stumble upon this new show, while trying to find something to watch, I did not expect this show to keep my attention. Does the show have some moments that demonstrate a sort of Nickelodeon/Disney type of humor? Yes, it does, but the overall storyline is very engaging.

I will admit that because of one character in particular; I decided to continue to watch the show, and that character is Ruby Martinez. Ruby is played by Jason Genao (he is also in “Logan,” and “The Get Down,”), and honestly, he is the star of the show. Ruby is just a nice guy that is constantly getting rejected by the girl of his dreams, but despite the rejection, he still treats her like a queen. He also adds a comedic element to the series that would definitely be lost if his character were no longer on the show. Don’t get me wrong, Sierra Capri (plays Monse), Diego Tinoco (plays Cesar), Brett Gray (plays Jamal), and Ronnie Hawk (plays Olivia), all do an excellent job in their roles on the show, but without a doubt, the show needs Ruby.

The reason why I am making such a strong case for his character is due to the fact that at the end of season one, Ruby is shot by a gang member named Latrell. The bullet was supposed to hit Cesar, who is in a rival gang, but instead, it hits Ruby and Olivia. So now, fans of the show do not know if Ruby and Olivia will survive the gunshot wound, and season two most likely will not be released until next year.

In my opinion, for the sake of the show, the writers need to make sure that Ruby survives this gun wound because I do not think that the show will survive without him. If Ruby ends up dying, the story will most likely shift to focus more on Monse’s drama with her mother, and I assume that Cesar will no longer be the same person that he was in season one. If Ruby dies, Cesar will blame himself for his death, and I believe that he will become a very dark and hateful character that will become fully involved in the gang lifestyle. However, I do not think that Ruby will die.

This is what I think is going to happen: Ruby will survive the gun shot, but his rehabilitation is going to be very expensive. In order to pay for his rehab, Jamal is going to use the money that he discovered from the RollerWorld treasure hunt, this way Ruby can continue his recovery process. Cesar is going to become a hardened gang member because of what happens to Ruby, so his character is going to go down a very dark path, while Monse tries to help him.

Monse is also going to reconnect with her estranged mother, which will create even more drama in her life, and sadly I think that Olivia is going to die, which is going to cause a serious rift between Ruby and Cesar (if you haven’t watched the show, you should probably watch it so my season two theories will make more sense). This is my prediction for what will happen in season two of “On My Block,” and I can’t wait for it to be released.

“On My Block” was released March 16, 2018.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
