After a disappointing loss in his home state to businessman Donald Trump, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL)
suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on March 15.A young, promising politician, Rubio was “once hailed as a Republican Party Savior" according to CNN. He was first elected to the Florida House and then subsequently to the U.S. Senate during the rise of the Tea Party movement in 2010. During the most recent election polls, however, he was considered a "second choice" for many Republican voters.
Despite his efforts to unite the GOP against front-runner Trump, Rubio only managed to secure Minnesota, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia in the Republican primaries.
His lack of support of the campaign was not solely due to Trump, however. According to interviews in exit polls, almost three out of 10 Republican voters would not vote for Trump in the presidential election. In addition, the LATimes called Rubio's rhetoric "robotic" in that he "repeated his lines over and over almost verbatim," which turned off a number of Republican voters.
In a speech to his supporters in Miami, Rubio stated: "While it might not be God's plan for me to be president in 2016, or maybe ever. And while today my campaign is suspended, the fact that I've even come this far is evidence of how special America truly is and all the reason more why we must do all we can to ensure that this nation remains a special place."
Following these remarks, Rubio gave an optimistic, inspiring message to his supporters.
"I ask the American people, do not give into the fear. Do not give into the frustration. We can disagree about public policy—we can disagree about it vibrantly, passionately. But we are a hopeful people and we have every right to be hopeful. For we in this nation are the descendants of go-getters."
Where Rubio's 169 delegates are released is up to the states. Most of these delegates will have the opportunity to pick another candidate in July at the Republican National Convention where the presidential nominee is finally chosen.
