It was Royal Wedding season. May 19th, 2018 marked the date when the British Prince, took place. The man, who is 6th in line to the throne, wed. People turned to the wedding from various parts of the world. Know why is this wedding out of the thousands that take place on a regular basis around the world?

Well, this wedding turned heads. How do you ask? Well, this Caucasian prince married a bi-racial princess, who was previously married, three years senior to the groom, and a famous Hollywood actress/model who holds a strong political view. She became a princess who was nowhere near the class to the traditional princess that we would have seen in England.

This wedding was the wedding which would create much speculation and push forth the change that we hope to see in our societies. I would say that this wedding is a great learning lesson for the South Asian culture. It would also teach the people of various South Indian cultures to be more accepting. The South Asian culture place numerous restrictions on its women especially when it comes to the topic of a wedding.

It teaches those within the South Asian Culture that we have to think beyond the restrictions that we place on the girls of our culture. It shows us that we can restrict them to simple roles that they are to fulfill, which is to marriage, bear children and take care of households. It shows us that women are not defined by a previous marriage, or their work, or even their skin color.

But, with time, traditions have to change. Hence pushing us to think about the flawed cultural mindsets. This wedding changed the traditions that have been persistent in England, thus showing us that the rest of the world has the chance to change as well.

One thing that this wedding shows the South Asian Culture is that women are capable and able to be much more than the restraints that we put them in. We can’t eliminate women, based on their appearances, past or social standing. Instead, if we were to look past the silly cultural thinking, we hold then maybe we may be able to improve the conditions that they live in.

Megan Markle, whose wedding brought so much attention from around the world was a stepping stone for the world. It broke tradition. This tradition, which would show the world, that it okay to move on from what we have been thoughts of the past. It shows us that if the world can see a change in fields, like science, math, technology, then we can change our cultural norms which suppress women. Her wedding is a political stepping stone which is driven by her appearances, her age, her prior job, and past affairs. These aren’t her flaws, but factors that show her positive side. Hence like the South Asian culture can genuinely learn from this event and begin to change their mindset indeed.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that.
