11 Roommate Questions I Still Have After Freshman Year

Some questions just don't have answers...

So, my first year is coming to an end. I wish I could say my overly analytical brain took some breaks this year, but it's actually quite the opposite. I'm still a dingus and am learning all of the social cues required if you're living with another person.

1. Is there an inconsiderate time to take a nap?

Everyone has the right to nap at any hour of the day. However, when my roommate is asleep at 3 in the afternoon on a Tuesday, am I being inconsiderate if I need to make some noise or is the other person being inconsiderate for sleeping at a time when most people need to get things done?

2. How much light is too much light?

There are some mornings when I really could use the light in the room to look at my face and decide whether or not I need some makeup on it. I guess I'll just leave it off and go into the world looking like the mess that I am inside...

3. When is it okay to play music aloud?

I know that you're saying it's "okay" for me to play some music, but is it actually? Does my taste in music suck???

4. When is okay to Skype/FaceTime friends/family?

For me, the answer is always yes. I really couldn't care less if my roommate was Skyping her mom at 1 in the morning. Family is family. That being said, we are both generally pretty cautious about talking too late and might move into the lounge should it get to be an inappropriate time.

5. When do my questions get annoying?

"Hey, what time do you think you'll get back?"

"Is it okay that my friend comes over for a bit?"

I must get annoying at some point.

6. Does it actually bother you when I use my electric toothbrush in the morning?

I know you're asleep... And this toothbrush can get kinda loud. *reluctantly brushes teeth manually*

7. When is it okay to not greet you when you come in the door?

Don't get me wrong I am a very polite person... I just don't really want to say hi and ask how you are five times a day.

8. ...Is that smell coming from your side of the room or mine?

Not sure if there's a polite way to ask that question.

9. When is it okay to ask him/her to stop doing something?

Yeah, I'm sorry... That leg shaking is driving me insane. I need you to never shake your leg again for the rest of eternity. That's not too extra, right?

10. Is there such a thing as too much cleaning?

Maybe I vacuum too much. I just don't like a dirty floor... I'm sorry.

11. When am I supposed to invite you to something?

I'm always down to bring my roommate to parties and stuff, but there comes a time when inviting them is just not appropriate. The last thing I want is for any feelings to get hurt by not inviting him/her somewhere. Don't mind me, I'll be contemplating this decision in all of my classes today.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
