Why Roommate Moms Are The Best

The first time you move away from home is hard. You have a whole new set of freedoms that you have to figure out how to appreciate. In this time, it can be hard to continue normal human functions. Mom is no longer around, sometimes you just need someone to tell you "be safe" and "text me when you get there" and just show general caring. This is where roommates can swoop in and save the day.

Here are the reasons that roommates that Mom are the best told through New Girl.

1. They will tell you when you aren't taking care of yourself.

Maybe you have a big test that you have have been talking about but can't find the motivation to study for. Maybe your room is a disaster area of epic proportions. Maybe you haven't showered in a week. Sometimes you just need a reminder that its time to get your life together. Roommates are the perfect people to deliver this message because they care about your well being and see you in your natural habitat. And because they are so real, you take their criticism very seriously.

2. They will listen to you complain about your life.

Everyone has bad days. Your roommates are there to hear about all of it. They are there to curse the people that cast the shadow of the doubt and to remind you that not all days are bad by making you laugh. They definitely step in for Mom by not judging you for your complaining and always being there when you need to chat.

3. You have someone to talk to about anything and everything.

Nothing is off limits. Boys, baggage, bodily functions, they hear it all. Once again, its a judge free zone. Its nice to have someone who will listen to you talk, especially about your goals and dreams. And of of course there are the weird conversations that come from the strangest thoughts. A good Mom roommate will be willing to talk about it all.

4. You feel safer wherever you go.

No matter where you are on campus, at work, or on a date, they know where you are. And that is great because if something where to happen, they would be the first one you would call to get out of trouble. They are the ones that text "Let me know when you get there" and "Be safe" and really make you feel like your safety is one of their top priorities. Everyone needs someone watching out for them.

5. They are there for every mental breakdown.

After bad days may come bad weeks, bad months, or bad semesters. Your roommates are there with you through it all. They are there to remind you that you shouldn't give up and that you are awesome. There is no way that you could survive these times without them right next to you encouraging you the whole way.

6. There is someone in your situation to give you advice.

Your roommates see every aspect of your life and hear about every detail. When you have problems they have the perfect advice because they have seen the situation unfold from a third party perspective. Also they care. They want to see you succeed and hate to see you fall, so they will never give bad advice.

7. Making dinner becomes a whole lot easier.

Mom roommates often have some kind of meal made by the time you get home and offer to share. Or they will see you making something and want to contribute so you can both have a really great meal. They take care of you to make sure that both of you get the most out of every meal.

8. Your closet becomes a whole lot bigger.

Got a date? Job interview? Themed party? They are there to help you out. If your own closet isn't good enough, it is time to jump into theirs. With the power of two or more closets, there are limitless possibilities. Knock 'em dead.

9. They will participate in things you are excited about.

You and your roommates have many adventures together and share great memories. But maybe they are not completely excited about going to sit in on a lecture about the political state of the Middle East. But they will go because they know that no one else is going to go with you. They know that having to walk into a lecture or event alone is no fun and they care about your passions and interests. Maybe its not their slice of pie, but they care about you so they will participate.

10. They will still love you no matter what.

Through all of this, your roommates are still going to love you if they are the best Mom stand-ins. And you will still love them even though you've filled in for Mom for them.

You might be hesitant to fill the mom position for your roommates. It can be hard to show someone you barely know that you care. But we are all in the same position, feeling alone and missing the motherly care you had at home. As roommates, we gotta take care of each other. "Momming" your roommates could create lasting friendships as you show your love and get to know each other better.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
