Rooming With Someone You Don't Know Is Important

The one rule I had for college was I had to room with someone I didn't know. I never argued with this rule because I always enjoyed meeting new people. Also, I wanted to go a big university just so I could meet new people so rooming with someone I knew would kind of ruin this. When you room with someone from your hometown you won't be willing to go out and meet new people. I know everyone has their own opinion about this topic but college is the time of our lives to make mistakes and meet new people.

Your friends in college are going to be your friends for a lifetime. I'm not saying ditch your high school friends that go to the same college as you. I still hang out with all my friends from my hometown, they have been there for me through everything and it's not right to ditch them for new friends. But if you room with a friend you aren't going to go out of your way to meet new people. Meeting new people is always fun because you meet someone and they might be just like you. Everyone is so different and it's exciting to meet people who come from all different backgrounds and have so many interesting stories.

I know theirs a ton of horror stories about going random and it scares a lot of people. Trust me I was a little nervous about this too. Universities have another way you can find a roommate, they make a Facebook page for freshman only. On the Facebook page you're supposed to type a little bio about yourself and if you see someone else bio and you think you would be a good pick then you message them. This is how I found my roommate Jessica. I was looking at her bio and we had a lot of common interests. I messaged her on Facebook and we talked for probably 4 days straight. Jess is now one of my best friends and we spend almost every second together.

If I didn't go on Facebook and try to find someone I would've never met Jess. Jess is literally the best person on this planet. We are both very needy people and we always want attention. When we're both in our room doing homework one of us will make s stupid noise to get the others attention just to say hi. I knew I wanted to be friends with my roommate but I didn't expect to be best friends with her. Whenever I go home she comes home with me and my family treats her like just another sister. She always knows how to cheer me up. So take the chance and room with someone you don't know! You could meet your next best friend!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
