Time and time again I was told, "It's better if you and your roommate aren't friends already." This does sound like it would make sense to a prospective college freshman who is eager to make new connections but I can assure you, this is absolutely not true. I had the opportunity to live with one of my best friends after an unfortunate incident with my previous roommate and I've never been happier. I'm not saying that this is the case always but more likely than not, getting to truly know your freshman roommate can spare you a lot of trouble in the long run. First of all, I can confidently say that I could never live with some of my current friends. It's not that they aren't great people, we just have completely different living styles. It's better to know that prior to living with someone than to go through with it and end up in an unfortunate and awkward situation. This is your home away from home and you want to be comfortable. So, I urge you to please take my advice and REALLY get to know your prospective roommate because sometimes online interactions just aren't enough.
