To my best friend, roommate, and personal cheerleader,

Hey you, yes you, Leah, I’m writing to you about the positive impact you’ve had on my life. Sadly, it isn’t as long as I wish for it to be, but if it was, it would be an entire book. With that being said, thank you for showing me what it’s like to have, and be a best friend.

Freshman year was full of awkward moments, but there is no one I would rather share those moments with, and no one I’d rather co-habitat with in our tiny, 4 by 4 dorm.

Each of those cringey floor meet-and-greets—that lead to getting to know each other—felt like pulling teeth at times. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Each spontaneous, awkward, adrenaline-filled moment lead to such a unique friendship.

Thank you for being the girl who has consistently pushed me to be my best self, helped me through my worst situations, and continuously is there for me whenever I need you to be. I can’t thank you enough for being my best friend, roommate, and at times, my mom these past four years of college.

From the nights we stayed in dancing to high school musical duets, watching SpongeBob for hours on end, or going out and thinking someone hotwired our car because there was no way it got towed (LOL).

Not only have we created so many adventures together, but you’re also the one whose cheered me on at every one of my dance shows, which means the world to me. Each moment together created a new story, and I’m eternally grateful to have memories that will last a lifetime.

Throughout our four years of living together, you helped me through every situation imaginable. You were always the person I could count on if boys were being dumb—and trust me, 99% of them are. You helped me pick up the pieces and become a much more independent, badass version of myself, and that is a lesson I will never forget.

You are Khaeleesi, and if anyone ever tells you different, they better bend the knee. You’re the most independent, kind, smart, badass girl I know—and I full-heartedly stand behind that. You’re the one who believes in me when I don’t even believe in myself, and encourages me to always be true to myself.

I love our goofiness, and I love how you’re always you no matter who’s watching.

You deserve the world, and though you may not see yourself, everyone around you knows everything I’ve written above is true. You’re an amazing human being, and I’m going to miss living with you. Here’s to a ‘see you later,’ because it’s never going to be a goodbye.

Lots of love,

Syd

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
