So I originally was going to watch "Me Before You" this week, but I got busy with work all week, so I didn't get a chance to go see anything. So, instead of doing a movie review, I decided to something a little different. Now I don't want to come off bashing "Me Before You"; I haven't seen the movie, so I can't say anything good or bad about it. What I can say is that a romance between two incredibly beautiful people can be hard to relate to for a lot of us out there. So I decided to gather together some romance movies for the more estranged person. These films are highly relatable and charming, and show us that we don't have to be human marvels to find love. So this is...
Romance Movies for Awkward People (in no particular order)!
1. "Anomalisa"
So this movie is probably the most unique movie on this list, visual wise. While there are no actual humans in this film, this is a very human story. The stop-motion animation for this movie is not only strikingly beautiful, it is the perfect way to tell the story about this guy and the way he sees the world. This film captures the feeling we all get from time to time: feeling alone and lost in this world, even when we are surrounded by people. Also, his love interest is so likable as a person. She feels ugly, unwanted, and constantly upstaged by her best friend, but even with her physical/emotional flaws, she finds out that someone could love her simply because she's herself. This film felt personal and real, and I loved that about it.
2. "Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind"
So, this movie was written by Charlie Kaufman, the writer/director of "Anomalisa," and this movie is just as real and charming, even though the main premise of the film (memory erasing) is impossible to do right now. This movie takes patience, and if you don't watch it until the end you will be totally lost, so make sure you commit time to finish the movie as a whole. Another thing I loved about this movie is Jim Carry; he isn't at all the "Ace Ventura" or "Dumb and Dumber" Jim Carry! He is remarkably subdued in an outstanding performance that I was not expecting from him. Also, if you loved Kate Winslet in another romance, "Titanic," watch this movie. She is delightfully crazy in this movie, and it's pretty funny to see her be insane while the one and only Jim Carry is telling her she's the nut-job! It's on Netflix (at the time I'm writing this), so check it out!
3. "Man Up"
This movie is also on Netflix right now! Lake Bell has no luck with the men (in the movie of course!). So while going to a trip somewhere, she accidentally steals another girl's blind date. Instead of coming clean and telling her date, Jack (Simon Pegg), the truth, she goes along with the date because-why not? She hasn't been on a date in a long time, and ends up having a great time with this man, even though he thinks she's someone completely different. This movie is sweet, innocent, and hilarious! Even around the third act where all the "bad things" are supposed to happen, it doesn't get sappy, or overbearing, it's just a great time! Lake Bell's character is really awkward but lovable, and Simon Pegg's character, while at first seems cool and collected, has problems of his own.
4. "500 Days of Summer"
Now, I wouldn't necessary class this as a romance movie, although it is a movie about love and what love can do to a person. The reason why I love this film is that Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character reminds me of myself so much. (Now I hope you don't watch this movie!) But even if you don't find yourself in this film, there's still plenty to enjoy. First of all, it is widely unique by not telling the story in a chronological order, which lots of films have done (I understand)! But I like the style in which this movie does it. It's turns every rom-com trope on it's head and shows the truth of love: love is really, really, really, hard! This movie is fun, it's heartbreaking, and while a lot of the parts are metaphorical, the story is real. If you're a major film fanatic, or you just like good movies, I think you should check out this wonderful film!
You may not have rock-hard abs, or the most outgoing personality and that's okay! These films prove that you don't have to be any of that. We are all humans and we all have flaws, and these movies showcase this! So even if you're not a Ryan Gosling or a Scarlett Johansson, you can find love; and if you don't find love, you can check out these movies!
