There are many times that I love a good road trip to a far destination. Most of the time there’s great music, great people, and great memories. Road trips can be breath-taking and life-altering. They can be adventurous or well-planned and still be incredible. But sometimes, road trips suck.
There are many reasons as to why one would suck. Firstly, and most obviously, the drive itself. Sitting in a car, staring out the same window, holding in the pee, and not being able to stretch your limbs all contribute to this reason. Who actually enjoys driving long distances? Are there actually people like this that exist? If so, where can I order one for every time I have to go somewhere far away but don’t feel like driving? The constant feeling of being cramped and holding down the gas pedal drives me nuts.
Speaking of holding down the gas pedal, I am well-aware that a thing called cruise control exists. However, we are all aware of a thing called traffic. Cruise-control and traffic do not mix. I am one that likes to coast at a solid, consistent speed during long, highway drives. Unfortunately, I do not feel that other roadway-ers understand this concept. Not only are there times when traffic jams occur due to an off-the-road collision that requires everyone on the road to stop and stare, but there are also times when people just strictly do not respect the fast lane. For those of you who may not know, if you drive slowly, stay to the right. Do not think that you can suddenly merge into the left lane going five below the speed limit without repercussions. I will be behind you abruptly, slightly to the left just so my headlight shines directly into your side mirror and into your eyes. You were not sorry for cutting me off, so neither am I.
Lastly, and yet most importantly, road trips suck because of thinking. When you have nothing else to do but stare at the road (or car) in front of you and drive, you think. This is the absolute worst. I’ll think about something that happened during recess in the 4th grade or something someone said on a Tuesday about my fingernails or even worse, I’ll think about serious life decisions. Decisions that involve my future, or my family, or other major happenings. It’s really just a messy drive if this occurs—tears, snacks, drifting, and nail-biting included.
As previously stated, road trips can be a wonderful experience filled with laughter and love. Road trips can be exciting and thrilling. Other times, though, trips on the road just simply suck.
