Road trips are easily the most time consuming way of traveling, and if not handled properly, they can be quite an everlasting and fidgety process. As a kid, I grew up traveling the road every winter, spring or summer break I got off of school. With easily over 200 hours of sitting in the car under my belt, I've found many ways to make any long journey a very enjoyable experience.
Here's a shot from a road trip I took in the spring time of this year in Zion National Park. This photo to me is more of a snapshot then photograph because normally I would like to do a lot more preparation then a simple grab and go, but it's still a great shot regardless.
Pro tip: Abandon the concept of time.
The big scary number of any trip is the time. The amount of time it takes to drive anywhere is always intimidating, and there really is no way around that. Except if you completely abandon the concept of time. That way you're not focused on when you're going to arrive at your destination, and it becomes more about the journey, which is the most important part. I recommend trying to keep your plans for the road as open as possible. What breaks up a road trip more then anything is all the quick side trips and stops you take while heading to your main destination.
My personal recommendation is maybe taking the scenic route and go on a picnic, or check out the nearest hike. A chance to stretch your legs is much needed on those long journeys!
Pro tip: There are designated jobs; choose accordingly.
If you're the driver, (props to you by the way), play little mind games with yourself or your other passengers to keep you entertained and your mind sharp! As the "shotgun" passenger, you have earned yourself the DJ job! You must have the perfect, easy listening, not annoying playlist at your disposal. That's not a small gig! As backseat passengers, you have the easiest yet most crucial task — hand selecting the perfect road trip pillows and blankets and you are the food service, so get good snacks! Duh!
Pro tip: Gas is always cheaper around the corner.
Never, ever, ever get gas at the first gas station unless you are desperate! If you are desperate, put two gallons in and continue on! You'll save yourself a few bucks that you might end up needing at the end of your excursion.
Pro tip: Don't be the person who always has to pee.
No one likes that person! Limit your liquids!
Pro tip: Don't be a dodo.
Know your limits. As the driver, don't push it. If you're tired or not feeling well, switch with someone or pull over.
Keep in mind, the journey along the way is about just that — the journey. It's about experiencing new things, keeping an open mind and just being present and in the moment. There are limitless possibilities for making memories. Take advantage of it.
