I knew going to a southern school I would be far away from home, but that didn't mean it would make the 8 hour drive any easier. It has gotten to the point where I finally have my own car and have made the drive a few times now. You may think it gets easier, but only if you have the right materials. That's why I've made a quick list of things you must have for any kind of long road trip, especially after my exciting experience this weekend.
1. Music
This is at the top of my list because being the person I am, music consumes my life. When it's not there, the road trip will suck. No one likes talking the whole time or sitting in awkward silence with people you may or may not know. Now there are a few options, but the radio isn't one of them. I made the mistake on the way back today to not have an aux cord, so listening to the same songs on every station, with commercials, was annoying. And don't worry, there are plenty of options for any kind of vehicle that you may be driving. I don't have an actual aux jack, so I use this wireless invention that connects to the FM radio. You can get a cassette one, buy a Sirius XM radio, or make some killer CDs. Just make sure you have the tunes. Also this is a great time for you wannabe DJs to make some killer playlists for all the parties you go to in college.
2. Food
Food is one of those things that you cannot live without, literally. And yes you may be able to stop at a gas station or McDonald's and waste your money on some crappy food, but instead pack some snacks. Take anything and everything. You may want something with sugar or something salty. You may want water or juice. Just pack it all. You never know what mood you will be in the next hour of the drive.
3. A buddy
I was unlucky this time driving alone. I learned an awesome trick if you don't have a buddy in the car with you. Each hour I try and call someone new, whether it be my friends or my family, I call them and talk about the most random things just to help pass the time. Soon enough you will be at your destination, and have had the help from phoning a friend. Being able to focus on something besides the seven hours you have left, is very very helpful.
5. Car check up
I am not good with cars, but from experience everyone should learn the basics. I learned my windshield wipers don't go fast enough to clear away a downpour. I also realized you have to refill your oil more often than not. Know where you spare tire is and probably how to put it on (but that is why I have Triple AAA to help a sista out). Just be aware that anything can come your way, and when you're by yourself you better pray that you know what to do if theres a hurricane, tornado, or blizzard that comes unexpectedly.
So don't be the guy or gal that forgets one of these things, because if you do, hopefully you aren't going to far away. Road trips are always fun when you come prepared.
