I would hope if you attend either Central Michigan University or Western Michigan University you would understand the rivalry between the two. They first started playing each other back in 1907 when Western won their first football game against Central. The rivalry didn’t start until 1948 though and till this day grows stronger and stronger every year and continues to become more serious.
This rivalry is known to have one of the highest intensity of pure hatred between their fans which is something not every rivalry has. The pure hatred is given on both ends and we all know neither school can care about another game more then this one.WMU’s coach P.J. Fleck had ranked CMU-WMU rivalry in the top 10 rivalry’s in the nation. CMU’s head coach was asked where he would rank this rivalry- and if so in the top 10. Coach John Bonamego responded, “I went here, so to me it’s the top rivalry in the country.” Coach also played for CMU and participated in this rivalry back in the 1980s and stated “This is one of those games where until you’ve seen it, you just can’t appreciate how intense it is”. I believe every student can vouch for that statement. To really hype up Coach Bonamego’s look on the Central/Western rivalry, as well as the students, when Bonamego was on the CMU football team, the Chippewas never lost a game to the Broncos. Each year the game switches location, last year on Western’s home turf, and this year on CMU’s home turf: October 1st, 2016 at 7pm. If you ever have the chance to prove that you are a true Chippewas fan or even a Broncos fan, then you will be in attendance at this game. Good luck and FIRE UP CHIPS!
