Recently I have been researching about the most successful Public Relations firms in the United States. My work entails finding who they are, researching their type of clients, and contacting them to propose partnerships. As I have been flying across the web looking for these firms, I have run across quite a few women-run firms. A large number of the 167 firms I looked up have women in the top positions. Many of the CEO's are women. And some of these firms have all of the listed staff members as women. This gives me such a happy feeling, to see that there are top-tier firms who are run by all women.
You can argue for diversity or working together with everyone and the need for men and women, and that is fine. I am not arguing against it. I simply think that seeing these successful companies filled with women as decision makers is monumental progress from the past, and it warms my soul. As I ran across various firms headed by and staffed by women, I was happy. However not all the news is good on this front. As Jennifer Risi points out in her Quartz Media article
, the PR industry is majority women throughout but with few women at the top. Think "Mad Men" and you will see images in your mind of the PR world in the 1950's USA, filled with men and only men at the top, with no future in sight for women in lead roles. Even if the scene is not perfect and there is still bias and inequality, at least the direction is positive, as Jennifer points out at her firm.I have been intrigued by this exclusivity idea, since my girlfriend began to participate in an organization that celebrates and supports women in the construction industry. What a wonderful network, for women in an industry that was previously dominated exclusively by men. And now New Orleans is spotted pink with Demo Diva's trucks and wrecking sites. Men driving Barbie Pink construction trucks is such a fun sight to see.
It is not surprising to see schools filed with female teachers, and administrative offices too; but advertising and public relations is quite a big accomplishment. I am proud to see this success, both of women at the top and offices with only women. Some of those firms are RBB Communications, Hunter PR, Prosek, and Lane PR.
Be on the lookout for successful women in power and do not be afraid to support groups which exclusively aid women, because we all know that together we are stronger, and men do not need that same support, as the world is already carved out for them.
