Samurai sexy? Is that a thing? It should be. "Make that Booty Go" ft. Nav is one of my favorite tracks from "Riptide," the new album from Tampa's prog post hip-hop band Samurai Shotgun. To me, this track allows the listener to see another side of the shotgun. Honestly, the way Bryant Harps' bass and Tyler Mulders' guitar communicate on the track is truly ridiculous.
Just when you think it can't get sexier, Jovan Lecaro kicks it up on those drums, setting the platform for one of the sickest rewind guitar solos from Mulder. I call them rewind solo because you know you have to rewind to try to understand why your ears are so wet.
Waiting for the Sunsets.
The track "Sunsets" feels like it was made from Mateo Prine Henley vocals. The vibe is really chill, and DJ Qeys' intercut scratches and mixing almost makes the entire track feel sampled. The only let down on this track is how soon it ended. Automatic rewinder, if you know what I mean.
I wanna call this Damn Jovan! Back it again with DJ keys on the jam. The title track "Riptide" and "Intrepid."
These guys are meticulously destructive. "Intrepid" ft. Donovan Melero is so ridiculously melodic, it feels like the band just let loose on the track.
"Riptide" opens with Harps' bass literally saying "Hey f*cker, listen up." The tone is furthermore set by Lecaro crashing down on the drums as DJ Qeys lays some dreamy, wet soundscapes. Easily switching back to scratching, DJ Qeys is too sick. The end, oh dear, Mudler unleashes another rewind solo and then creates this epic wall of noise, a great match for Henley's vocal production on the track.
So, I'll go with "Riptide" as my favorite overall because I truly enjoyed how each member played a key role in the track. Also, it showcases the development and what's to come from Samurai Shotgun.
