Richmond is known for many things (silly names for baseball teams, punch-drunk attornies). They're also known for institutions. One such place, "The Crazy Greek," has been a dining destitation in RVA for over forty years. Last week I say down with John Alexandropoulos, who's owned the Greek since 1996, to talk about their newest location at Innsbrook.
My family has a long history with "the Crazy Greek." My Mom has been going since 1976, back when there were jukeboxes on the Wall. Mom has photos of those days that she gave to John, a fact he fondly reminded me of at our interview. I've been eating there with my family since I can remember. Dinners with my grandparents, seeing family and friends there; Baked spaghetti, club sandwiches, baby greek salads; Only one place can provide these items to my liking.
When I was first going, there was only the original location at Staples Mill. Every time we went, the place was mobbed. There was a little hallway for folks waiting to be seated; standing room only every time.
I (almost) always ordered the baked spaghetti. The plate was overflowing and the cheese always melted just right. I've been ordering that dish for over twenty years. Lucky for me, John told me I'll still be able to order my favorite at this newest location, "We're not changing." Indeed, Alexandropoulos said diners can expect the same family atmosphere they've grown up with. Richmond's favorites (spanakopita, mousakka, gyros,) will all be available, along with new specials and limited time features.
It's a family affair for John, whose kids have helped run the restaurants. "My three kids want to carry on the tradition of the Crazy Greek." With (soon to be) three restaurants, the legacy will live on for a long time.
The Crazy Greek at Innsbrook is located at 3641-A Cox Road and will be serving lunch and dinner seven days a week. They open for business Monday, November 6th.
