You don’t know me. You don’t know my story. But you know I’m rich.
Hopefully that got your attention. I’m not going to talk about something totally different –– I didn’t just put that title to get your attention. I really am pretty rich, but not in the way you’d assume. Sure, my parents and I had a comfortable life, but we worked for it.
What I mean when I say rich, though, isn’t what you might think. Not to mention you probably have a lot of preconceived notions about what a rich white girl is, or would look like. Everyone assumes the whole ‘”Legally Blonde” type for a rich white girl. Let me put an end to that now: we don’t all wear sparkly bikinis and join ‘ditzy’ sororities. Although Reese Witherspoon does do us a ton of justice by looking good and getting a crazy difficult degree, she couldn’t have gotten there just by money alone.
Being rich isn’t just about money but about opportunities. She was given the opportunity to go to a school some of us can only dream about. She was given this not only by having a school with a library and resources to help better prepare her, but an amazing support network –– no matter what you think about sororities.
When I say I’m rich, that’s what I mean. Yes, some opportunities come with a price tag, but not all are contingent on that. More and more today financial aid is getting more abundant and easier to get than before. Years ago if you didn’t have the money – you couldn’t go to college. Period. Now, you can get funding if you’re short or if you’re a certain race. Tell me that’s not awesome. Not to mention I have friends and family some people dream about –– even if they aren’t exactly what I need sometimes. They are always there. They support me and help me in ways I still probably don’t understand. Being rich doesn’t always mean what you might think, and chances are you’re richer than you know. Next time you're down in the dumps, just remember this.
