The fall season in Rhode Island is indescribable. Between the satisfying sound of freshly fallen leaves crunching beneath your feet and the sight of a colorful array of leaves adorning massive oak trees, this beautiful season is hard to beat.
There comes a point in the early weeks of fall that "fall-fever" kicks in. Temperatures begin to drop and I, along with other Rhode Islanders, find myself looking for any excuse to be outside enjoying the seasonal weather we've all come to know and love.
Fortunately, Rhode Island is notorious for its fall festivities that are both affordable and kid-friendly, so I've compiled a list of fivefamily-friendly activities that will get you into the seasonal spirit!
1. Apple picking.
I recommend places like Phantom Farms in Cumberland, Rhode Island, Jaswell's Farm in Smithfield, Rhode Island and The Big Apple in Wrentham, Massachusetts. Apple picking usually begins in the early weeks of September, so be sure to go early in the season to avoid selling-out!
2. Scituate Arts Festival.
The annual Scituate Arts Festival in picturesque Scituate, Rhode Island takes place over Columbus Day weekend and has been a Rhode Island tradition for 50-years. The festival is the perfect place to stroll through aisles of crafts, antiques and art from more than 300 exhibitors in the crisp fall air.
3. Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular.
One of the best places to take your friends and family in the Fall is to Roger Williams Park Zoo to view the Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular. One of the largest displays in New England, this nighttime event proudly shows off 5,000 expertly-carved pumpkins from early October until shortly after Halloween.
4. Fall Foliage Walks.
If you're looking for a cost-free activity, a fall foliage walk is the way to go! Just a few minutes along trails at places like Lincoln Woods or Chase Farm in Lincoln, Rhode Island will have you gasping in awe at the breathtaking sights.
5. Corn Mazes.
Corn mazes are a great way to get, quite frankly, lost. Whether you're a thrill seeker and prefer a scary maze or would rather something more family-friendly, you'll enjoy getting lost in the many cornfields located throughout Rhode Island.
