According to Forbes magazine, the Juul company is enduring its first lawsuit. A teen that smoked two pods a day suffered from a stroke that left him with left-side paralysis, a speech impediment, and half of his vision lost from both eyes. He had been addicted ever since 2015, taking puffs every ten minutes. This obviously became a major problem for him.
Here's the why on Juul being a problem: the technology is fairly new. It's only become popular in the last five years, therefore there is very little research on the effects of juuling and vaping on the body. We don't know what the e-cig juice or flavored pods do to the brain or lungs. It could be worse than the effects of cigarettes, it could be better. What's inside those pods could be less harmful than a cigarette, or even more. The problem is that we just don't know. That is scarier than anything else, if you ask me.
Along with this, the sale of Juuls and other e-cigs were banned in San Francisco, ironically where the Juul company headquarters is located. Politicians claim that Juul is purposely marketing towards children to sell more products and support Big Tobacco. Juul obviously rejects this by claiming that juuls and e-cigs are meant to help wean cigarette addicts off of them. It's an "alternative for the adult smoker". But what does that really mean?
More than 20% of high schoolers vape e-cigarettes by the time of their senior year. Even 5% of middle schoolers are doing it, which is absolutely insane. Children are NOT the adult smoker and should never be addicted to something that we don't know the toxicities of.
Politicians that have Big Tobacco in their back pocket aren't necessarily motivated to diminish the sale of Juuls. This is why I use the word epidemic. Kids are addicted left and right to nicotine and no one is doing anything. The sale of Juuls should be banned across the country, unless we want to see the downfall of our youth.
