After shutting the Texans out in week three, the Patriots were on the other end of the spectrum after putting up zero points against the Buffalo Bills in a 16 to 0 loss.
Tyrod Taylor threw for 246 yards and a touchdown, while Jacoby Brissett threw for 205 yards and rushed for 23. While Brissett didn’t throw any interceptions, he fumbled twice, recovering one but losing the other on what looked like the Patriots only real potential scoring drive throughout the entire game.
Stephen Gostkowski missed his only field goal attempt on the day, with the Patriots having 101 less total net yards of offense compared to Buffalo.
What It Means
While New England’s dream of an undefeated season comes crashing down in week four, the Patriots still hold first place in the AFC East. Also, Tom Brady is back. It isn’t time to start panicking yet.
Jimmy Garoppolo was once again held out due to his shoulder injury, but with Tom Brady back, this will be more of a non-factor going forward (unless Brady gets hurt).
Rob Gronkowski has still barely played. He does not seem to be one hundred percent. Is this related to the Madden curse?
Stat of the Game
The Patriots were only able to convert 1 out of 12 third down attempts. That’s a conversion rate of 8 percent. They were also able to convert 2 out 3 fourth down attempts. Buffalo was able to convert 7 out of 15 third downs, for a conversion rate of 46 percent.
Unsung Hero
The Gronk-less Patriots must be very happy about their trade with Chicago earlier this offseason. Although the Patriots were unable to score, Martellus Bennett has looked amazing through four games, whether it’s with his blocking or receiving skills. Bennett was the one bright spot in a pretty dreadful game, having five receptions for 109 yards. That was more than half of the Patriots receiving yards on Sunday.
Noteworthy
I’ve already mentioned it a few times, but Tom Brady was officially reinstated today. That means he is able to talk to his coaches and teammates, be around team facilities, and finally return to the practice field. Tom Brady will take control of a 3 and 1 team that looks to have playoff potential.
What’s Next
The Patriots will play their first away game since week one as they venture to Cleveland to take on the 0-4 Browns at 1 PM Eastern Standard time. The game will be available locally on your CBS affiliate or streamed live online on NFL Sunday Ticket in areas where it is not available.
