If you’re looking for an article that is organized with a clear topic at hand, you’re reading the wrong article. But if you want to hear opinion on all these revivals/reboots/spin-offs that Netflix and other networks are doing, then please continue to read. But I am warning you, it is going to be a bit of a mess because this is like three articles in one.
2016-2017 seems to be the year(s) of revivals, spin-offs, and reboots. The most famous ones that I can think of is Girl Meets World (Spin-off to Boy Meets World), Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, The X-Files, and Fuller House. I have yet to watch The X-Files, Gilmore Girls, or Fuller House. But I’ve heard mixed reviews about all of them. I’ve heard some people say they’re great and would like to continue making more episodes. But to source one of my favorite podcasts called Pop Culture Detectives when they discussed this topic they said that the shows are “playing on the early 90s nostalgia.” The content I’ve heard isn’t even that good. The only thing I’ve heard about Gilmore Girls is not to watch the last episode of it if I don’t want to be upset. Which I was never a huge fan of Gilmore Girls anyway; I’d watch a few episodes here and there, but I have not watched the entire series. It is something I’d like to do eventually, I really don’t have the attention span to sit through an hour drama and binge it like most people do. But I can watch six episodes of Hot in Cleveland and call it a day!
What I really wanted to discuss is we got the news that Girl Meets World is officially cancelled by Disney. Girl Meets World was my favorite of these spin-offs. If you could not have guessed, it is a spin-off of Boy Meets World, the classic late 90s-00s show about Cory and Topanga Matthews. Girl Meets World revolves around their daughter Riley, meeting the world. While I’m sad about this, I actually expected this to happen. It is the third season and Riley and her friends are in high school now. Disney Channel has limits because of their audience of 5-12 year olds. Then again, I’m 26, and I watch a show on Disney Channel. That’s beside the point. The point I’m trying to make is that when people get into high school there is a lot more content that could be talked about such as drugs, dating, etc. Some of it was even covered in BMW. Disney Channel cannot do an episode about drugs because they would have raging parents. Not that I want these characters to get messed up in these issues, but every kid in high school goes through some kind of issue and that is relatable. This is why I’m hoping that Netflix and/or Freeform will pick it up. I believe that the stories in the characters of Riley, Maya, Farkle, Lucas, and even Auggie aren’t finished. There’s so much more that can be brought to the surface. Disney Channel gave it a great start, but they have limits on their content. So, network executives of Netflix and Freeform, please do not let this be the end of Girl Meets World. Please finish their stories.
