In December 10, 2002, Aaliyah's posthumous album I Care 4 U was released following her death in August 2001. Now fourteen years after, Aaliyah's music has been influential to the R&B genre. In honor of it's fourteenth anniversary (yeah, that'll be a thing for today even though December 10 passed), here are some of Aaliyah's greatest hits found in I Care 4 U.
1. Are You That Somebody
Put together by Timbaland and Static Major on short notice for the movie Dr. Dolittle, "Are You That Somebody" has been nominated for a Grammy and MTV Movie and Video Award. "Are You that Somebody" is credited for revolutionizing the R&B genre with its unusual beats.
2. Try Again
Written again by Timbaland and Static Major, "Try Again" was released as the lead single for the film Romeo Must Die, in which Aaliyah additionally stars in opposite to Jet Li. "Try Again" was nominated for a Grammy and won an MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video and Best Video For A Film. Plus, the choreography is referenced in an episode of The Mindy Project.
3. More Than A Woman
Nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in the 45th Annual Grammy Awards and written by Timbaland and Static Major for her self-titled album, "More Than a Woman" is a catchy song describing love and wanting to be something "more than a lover." Luckily, "More Than a Woman" is one of the many catchy songs by Aaliyah found in the compilation.
4. One in a Million
Written by Missy Elliot and Timbaland for Aaliyah's second album, One in a Million, "One in a Million" became a breakthrough hit for all three artists. Additionally, "One in a Million" became influential in the R&B genre and was considered innovative for it's time, 90's that is.
5. I Care 4 U
Written by Missy Elliot and Timbaland originally for One in a Million, it was removed and revisited for her self-titled album. "I Care 4 U" was then released as a single to promote her compilation album. Although there are many Best Aaliyah songs lists', there is a big chance that "I Care 4 U" will be found in every list as one of her best.
6. Got to Give it Up
Although a remix version is used in I Care 4 U, this Marvin Gaye cover is one of Aaliyah's most popular covers. Aaliyah successfully recreates Gaye's funky voice while still adding her own touch. "Got to Give it Up" is definitely one of the highlights found in I Care 4 U.
Aaliyah's legacy in R&B lives on. If you have not heard any of Aaliyah's songs before, these are some selections to start with.
