Reviewing The Bold Type

So, if you are a millennial (or anyone who pays attention to the network formerly known as ABC Family) you might have started watching a new show called " The Bold Type," which is inspired by "Cosmopolitan." Set in New York City, at a fashion magazine called Scarlet, the show follows three young employees and best friends: Sutton, an assistant; Jane, a newly promoted writer; and Kat, the magazine's social media manager. This show has just about everything a millennial woman could want: fun and empowering characters, awesome clothes, good life lessons, relatable events, and my personal favorite, a drama that is not over the top. So, here is the good, the bad, and the not-so-ugly about "The Bold Type."

The good: The characters are relatable. They are young, passionate, trying to climb the ladder in the magazine world, have love life issues, and like a good glass of wine. They have varied backgrounds, ambitions, and goals. And they are not supermodel gorgeous. You can see yourself in them. It's not super dramatic. While the action in their lives is definitely a bit heightened, there is not a constant stream of cheating, murders, and so on to keep the action going.

The aesthetics. The show is fun, colorful, and fast. The clothes are great (obviously, the show is set at a fashion magazine), the sets are colorful and varied, and yet none of them are overwhelming.

The bad: The show feels a bit too perfect sometimes. It hits all the right notes for millennials, but sometimes it feels like lip service. Throw us a curveball. Make a character stand out. It can start out a bit slow. The characters feel a bit one-dimensional (though I'm sure as the show goes on, that will get better). Still, as relatable as it is to millennials, it feels like it is a bit unattainable, which I guess might be also part of the appeal.

The not-so-ugly: The characters feel real. Yes, their clothes are glamorous. Yes, they are on their way to fabulous lives. You do not feel shamed for not being this ideal of womanhood that the media has perpetuated. As I said before: the aesthetics of the show. They match the environment. The characters. The jobs.

Overall, this show is great if you are looking for something fun and serious, frothy and deep. Yes, those are contradictory, but that is what this show is. If you are looking for something to keep you hooked without overestimating your appetite for the ridiculous and macabre or underestimating your intelligence, check it out! It is a unique concept.

Overall, 4.5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend. Watch it now.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
