The Harry Potter legacy continues with the release of the film "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." Upon hearing that there would be a prequel film to the Harry Potter series, I was both excited and skeptical. What could possibly be as good as the original eight films? What if this film takes away from the original Harry Potter experience or doesn't live up to the hype? Ultimately, I decided to see the film. "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is based off of a textbook from the original films. The movie takes place in the 1920s and features a British wizard who arrives in New York City, where the magical world is very different. With him he has a magically-expanded suitcase in which he keeps various magical beasts he studies. The action starts when the creatures escape from the suitcase leading to a manhunt.
It is important to note that this is NOT a Harry Potter movie. It is not meant to be. It is simply a story that takes place in the magical world we loved throughout the Harry Potter series. There are some shared features and characters. It even shares the same exciting intro and music. If one had not seen Harry Potter before they would be a tad confused as several of the spells and characters and customs mentioned were given no explanation.
I personally loved the movie. It was off to slow start, but gradually became extremely entertaining and suspenseful. It was a combination of a feel-good film and action/drama film. Overall the film made me nostalgic. I am excited to see where this new story goes and for its sequels.
