So I went home for Columbus Day weekend and it was lovely, and during that time I managed to catch up on a lot of movies. And because I love what I do, let us talk about them.
Now remember this is all strictly opinion based, if you don’t have the same opinion that’s totally fine. Just respect mine and I’ll like you as a person.
Here go.
Deepwater Horizon:
Ok, this movie could have been great. It really could have… But there are a couple things that just stop it from being great to just good and unfortunately just good is where it stands.
- The first hour is painfully long and boring. I do not care about the characters aside from Mark Wahlbergs character. It also didn’t help that the camera was shaking uncontrollably and it just made me sick. It’s just, we don’t need the first hour!!!! We don’t need to talk about the ship or the science of the oil. I don’t care, and this isn’t school. This is a movie theater and people came to see interesting characters and a storyline.
- The script at times is cringe worthy.
I shit you not there is a line that says “I hate the color magenta, that’s the most dangerous color on the ship”. Oh gee, I wonder why that is. I mean it’s not like this is about the worst oil spill in history. It can’t possibly mean code magenta is when shit goes down, oh wait. Seriously, this movie foreshadows I think more times than I have ever seen in a movie. It literally starts with Mark Wahlbergs daughter showing us what’s going to happen on the ship with a coke can as she’s practicing for her school presentation.
Other than that, the only great part is the last 40 minutes when something actually happens. It’s intense, I care about what happens, and it’s brutal. And the very very last scene is heartbreaking. So…. Kudos to that I guess

Don’t Think Twice:
This is absolutely, without a doubt in my mind, the best movie I have seen all year.
This movie reminded me of me and my real friends and how we talk to each other. It is probably the most realistic movie I have seen in years. The entire movie is mainly conversations with friends and improv but you know it? It’s compelling! There’s a storyline in there too but the main focus is just on friendship and how one can maintain a good friendship. The entire cast in this movie does a fantastic job and of all honesty this movie did have me a bit teary eyed in the end. Right when the movie ended, I wanted to watch it again. I felt like it was more of an experience than a movie. Because there were times where I forgot I was watching a movie. That’s probably the best compliment I can give a movie. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for director Mike Birbiglia.

Sully:
Another great movie!
I’ve always been a fan of Clint Eastwood as a director and what I loved what he did here was, he made a story here from something that was really short lasting in real life, in to an interesting narrative. I’m generally curious to see what happens next and what happens after that and after that. Tom Hanks of course does an amazing job playing Chesley Sullenberger, and another thing I found very interesting was that this whole thing gave him anxiety and PTSD which made me care more about the person and which makes the scene where the accident is taking place more intense. I’m just amazed I liked it as much as I did. My only problem was that it just ended too abruptly.

The Girl on the Train:
You know, one time I made a short film for a class which involved a chase scene that was hysterically awful and an obviously fake beating. It also had a predictable ending and incredibly stupid characters.
Every single second of that short film was more intense and emotionally impactful than anything in The Girl on the Train.
