About every year since 2004, VH1 honors some of the best artists that have graced the hip hop charts. This year there was a slight twist, all of the recipients were female hip hop legends! As a result of the show featuring all women, this year it was entitled 'All Hail The Queens'. As many fans of rap and hip hop music know, rap music is predominately run by male artists and it is very hard for a female rapper to make it big on the charts. I was beyond elated when I found out that some of my favorite female rappers were being honored.
This year the recipients were Lil Kim, Missy Elliot, Salt N' Pepa and DJ Spinderella, and last but not least Queen Latifah. As a fan of hip hop music, I of course loved these women, and all of their contributions that they have made to the industry. Throughout the awards show we got to see performances by some of these ladies along with stories about how they made it to the top of the game!Of course the best part of the awards show was all of the performances that went on. Past and present superstars performed these ladies greatest hits along with them and really gave us a very good show. Stars such as Remy Ma, Fat Joe, Dej Loaf, French Montana, EVE, Naughty By Nature, Da Brat and many more came out to perform on show their respect.
Overall, the awards ceremony was very successful and really showed that women are capable of making it in the hip hop music industry and can do whatever they set their minds to. But of course, there was one mistake that occurred that really caused the fans watching to talk. During Lil Kim's performance at the end of 'Get Money', she brought out a friend of hers and also a well known rapper, Rich Homie Quan to rap the late great, Notorious B.I.G's part. During Quan's performance he almost forgot all of the lyrics which ultimately caused a lot of uproar with fans.
This year's Hip Hop Honors 'All Hail The Queens' was very entertaining and very successful! It was a night full of classics that really showed what hip hop was and is all about. I can't wait to see who VH1 honors next year.
