Even though it has only been in theaters for two weeks, Disney’s latest film, "Zootopia" has already made a lot of noise. It has already shattered box office records and is already being called one of Disney’s best films yet. There has been so much hype behind this film since its release, and critics are even going as far as calling it one of the best movies of 2016. Now hype is one thing.
Everyone loves to hype everything up and every movie commercial loves to call any movie (even a Haunted House 2) the best movie of the year. Fellow Disney film "Frozen" had so much hype it was crazy. So one question I asked myself before seeing this was, is this movie all hype and just okay? But I can honestly say that after seeing this movie, I can agree with everyone else that it is indeed one of Disney’s best films yet.
This film has everything; a great plot, interesting and memorable characters, a great message, a great cast of actors, great animation, everything that you need for a great animated film. The plot of the film, without giving too much away, centers on Judy Hopps (played by Ginnifer Goodwin), a rabbit with a dream of going beyond what is expected of her as rabbit (being a carrot farmer) and going after her dream of becoming the first rabbit police officer.
She achieves her goal despite everyone else doubting her and she makes her dream come true and makes it to the big city of Zootopia. Once she arrives in the city, she hits a bit of a slump and gets stuck on parking duty. She encounters Nick Wilde (played by Jason Bateman), a fox who is a smooth talking con artist. Eventually, she sets out to prove herself by jumping on the biggest case and even enlists Nick’s help to not only solve this case but prove that she really is worthy of being a police officer.
Hopps proved to be a great protagonist for this movie showing and proving that she was more than just a cute little rabbit. Ginnifer Goodwin’s performance really helped bring the character to life and made Hopps one of Disney’s memorable characters. There is one scene near the end of the movie, where Goodwin’s acting talent really shines. She proves to be a great role model for kids because of her drive to reach her dreams. She had others doubt her and tell her she would never achieve her dream but she did not listen to them and kept pushing herself forward.
Even when she got knocked down, she got back up and never gave up on her dream. Even after she got on the ZPD, she still had her doubters; even her boss didn’t believe she had it in her to be a cop just because of her size. But again she didn’t give up and by the end of the film you definitely see how her work pays off and you also see how she grows as a character. This sends a great message to children and adults not to give up on their goals and to keep pushing forward, even when it gets tough. It also sends the message to not let anyone tell you that you can’t do something and to always believe in yourself even when others don’t.
But the character that really stood out to me was the smooth talking fox, Nick Wilde. Jason Bateman really steals the show in this film, bringing his charm and quick wit that brought Nick to life. The chemistry between Nick and Hopps was amazing as they both worked well off of each other and were not the stereotypical Disney dynamic of a male and female lead instantly falling in love.
Hopps actually had her own prejudices against foxes when she met Nick and this would come in to play later on in the film. They had the typical dynamic of two polar opposites eventually getting over their differences and coming together in the end. But the other factor that really made Nick stand out to me was the message that he represented that was the big message of the movie.
The big theme of this film is the idea of dealing with and overcoming prejudice. In the film, the world is split between predator and prey and while they do try to live together there is still prejudice even in the seemingly perfect world of Zootopia. One of the typical clichés and stereotypes of a fox is that they are sly and sneaky. And I know going into this movie, thinking Nick is going to be exactly how you would expect a fox to be. But at one point in the movie, Nick acknowledges how he has been stereotyped and became the way he was just because he was always expected to just because he was a fox.
This really connects with the big message of the film about overcoming racial prejudices and how big of an effect discrimination has on people. The message is brought across beautifully through the animal characters showing the division between predator and prey and even making the point of showing how even the cutest looking prey could be a bigger monster than the most menacing looking predator, also showing how not to judge a book by its cover.
What more can I say about this movie that hasn’t already been said? It’s a great movie. It’s great for adults and for kids. It has a great cast of actors, a great plot and a great message behind it. I also have to mention how great the design of this movie is as well. The four districts of the big city looked amazing along with the main city itself. The color and design of this movie is some of Disney’s best to date. And if you’re looking for a good laugh, you will get plenty of them here. Everyone’s seen the sloth trailer and I can promise you now the trailer is just a small taste of what’s to come. You will find yourself smiling by the time this movie is over, I guarantee it.
I cannot recommend this movie enough. Whether you are a Disney fan, or just love a good movie, you will find one here. If you’re a parent take your kids to see this movie; they will love it and in return they will love you. This is one of the best movies Disney has had in a while. It’s funny, nice to look at, it has a great message and it’s an experience you will enjoy all the way through.
I give this film a 9.5 out of 10. Go see it if you haven’t already!!
