Although it did not receive any Golden Globes from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), I believe that one of the best films of the month is Hidden Figures. The film, directed by Theodore Melfi, was released in theaters on December 25, 2016, and was based off of the book, written by Margot Lee Shetterly. Hidden Figures details the story behind the African American women that made it possible for NASA to shuttle men to the moon and back. Without the help of Katherine Johnson (played by Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (played by Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (played by Janelle Monáe), NASA would not have been able to beat the Russians in the "International Space Race" of the 1950's and 1960's.

All three female leads portrayed strong and intelligent African American women struggling to bypass the hardships that befell them due to discrimination by the white and male populations of the United States during this time of deep struggle in the United States. The film is set in 1961, a few years prior to the Civil Rights Act that outlawed segregation and discrimination based on race, gender, or skin color. The film shows the brave steps taken in the national space program to break down these barriers, well before national steps were taken. The film score was absolutely beautiful and went perfectly with the film. It was equally beautiful and powerful; a reflection of the message of the film and the characters portrayed.

I highly recommend this film, especially for young women. I left the theater feeling so empowered, as if I could do anything that I put my mind to because I am a female. Hidden Figures had just the right amount of humor, showing off the stereotypical Southern African American woman's fierce nature. It also showed the importance of family and love in the lives of the three women. By the end of the film, you feel just as though you know these women and have experienced the struggles with them. If you are looking for something to watch this weekend, head over to your local cinema and watch Hidden Figures!

April Ludgate

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.

Amidst my hectic college career, I always find time for one thing, even on the busiest weeks: Parks and Recreation. This show has made me laugh and has made me cry, but most of all I have related to this show more than I would like to admit.

Here are some "Parks and Rec" moments that relate to life struggles that just about everyone faces.

April Ludgate

April Ludgate from Parks and Recreation is notorious for her "I don't care" attitude. She speaks her mind without caring what anyone thinks of her. Fans love her because she isn't afraid to be herself. April can seem cold and negative, but she's really just fearless and strong-minded. And despite her sometimes harsh words, April truly cares about the people she's closest to. These are all reasons she is the epitome of a college student. April complains whenever she has to do any kind of work, but ends up doing the work anyway. April Ludgate is the ultimate college student spirit animal.
