The latest talk on the movie scene is the newest X-Men movie--Logan--is one of the best superhero movies yet. Given the great reviews and my love of Wolverine and the X-Men, I thought I would go see it and give it a shot. Here's what I thought.
Argue with me as much as you want, Logan was not a superhero movie. It was realistic drama that just happened to have superheroes in it--if you could even call Logan, X-23, and Professor X superheroes in this movie. The movie achieved a very quickly established aesthetic of gritty realism that instantly set the mood. From the beginning you knew exactly what kind of movie you were getting yourself into.
As the movie developed, you see Logan become much more of the gritty, witty, and no-bullshit person that he already was. He's now taking care of Charles, who has developed some sort of mental disease that's amplified by his powers. But once Logan gets thrust into a situation where he has to take care of a young child named Laura, he must take her to the border of Canada to protect her from the people trying to kill her.
And let me just say--the three main characters in this movie(Charles, Logan, and Laura) are by far some of my favorites that I have ever seen in a movie. Though Laura is mute for most of the movie, it's impossible to not immediately like her when she kicks some major ass with her Wolverine claws(and her awesome toe-claw). Logan is a bit harder to love in this movie, but if Logan was an easy character to love, he wouldn't be the Wolverine that we all know and love. Despite Charles's deteriorating mental state, he still retains the wisdom and awesomeness we all started to like in the first place.
Filled with great character development, gritty realism, awesome action scenes, and heart-wrenching moments, Logan is a movie that I suggest all people watch--even if they don't like superhero movies.
