Let me set the scene: April 26, 2017. I am sitting in a movie theater with a medium popcorn and a drink I snuck in. It is 7:45 and I am seeing “Avengers Infinity War,” and let me say I was not ready for that emotional roller coaster.
Now that nearly a month has passed, I can finally form a coherent thought about “Infinity War.”
Spoilers ahead!
Before I get into talking about the fantastic cast and how gorgeous the movie was, let's talk about the opening. You know the intro where “Marvel Studios” rolls across the screen, and the theme music plays? What blew my mind and made me realize that as an audience this was going to be an event was the lack of this music. The music any Marvel fan would instantly recognize. At first, I thought the theaters' sound was broken and worried about having to change theaters or not being able to see it that night. But no, it was just a stark way to open up what was the most anticipated movie of the year.
I was so impressed with how many characters were integrated into the plot of the movie and how all these different storylines were woven together; from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” to “Black Panther” and “Dr. Strange.” The pairings they came up with like Thor and the Guardians, Tony Stark and Dr. Strange were so unexpected and pleasing as a viewer. These insane match-ups of characters, who operated in different segments of the MCU, were all finally brought together.
Of all the different entrances characters made, the two that really struck a cord were Steve Rodgers (“Captain America/Nomad”) and Bucky Barnes. Steve’s rising from the shadows into the scene was cinematically astonishing. I kid you not, the audience all shrieked (@ me). It was amazing seeing him cast off the persona of Captain America and become Nomad. Seeing him on screen having removed the silver star from his outfit and given his shield back to Tony, really drove home the idea he has moved on from Captain America. Now, Bucky Barnes is my favorite character in the MCU and seeing him simply chopping wood looking at peace was great as a fan of a character who hasn’t been at rest since the first Captain America movie.
Now, no one will likely believe me, but I sort of called the ending of Infinity War. As a writer, it was a bold move but seeing how as the movie has been bursting records every week it’s obviously paid off. I joked with my friend that that was how I wanted it to end; of course, I ended up sobbing from the minute Gamora died until the end. Like horrible shaky sobs. Overall, I’m not worried about most of our beloved heroes. And I’m pretty sure our end credit heroine will have a large part to play in that.
Since the movie came out, I love hearing about all the improvised lines and how these actors have come to embody their characters. There are a million more things I loved about “Infinity War,” from the surprise Red Skull appearance to the End Credit scene. Now if only I could bring myself to watch it again….
