Over the years, Christian movies have gotten a bad reputation. The most recent film released by Lionsgate has resonated with audiences around the country for its message behind the Christian music industry's most popular song by Mercyme, I Can Only Imagine. The song has been a staple in worship settings since its initial release and is still being played today.
Imagine walks through the life story of the lead singer of Mercyme, Bart Millard. Bart Millard is portrayed by actor J. Michael Finley, whose vocals were used throughout the film and were absolutely stellar. Bart Mallard's father is played by none other than Dennis Quaid (The Parent Trap.)
The movie features the two characters as they go through a struggling family dynamic. As my boyfriend and I were watching in a full theater, we heard several older people laughing at the accuracy of the film's portrayal of the early 80's and people crying when something resonated with them.
It's difficult to find Christian movies that are real and tell a true story. Most of the movies on Netflix in the Spiritual category are hilariously awful. The acting and storylines are terrible, and nothing resonates or is substantial.
There are some films and mini-series like Passion of The Christ and The Bible have been funded enough to tell an amazing true story of hope and perseverance, though.
I'll be honest. I honestly walked into Imagine thinking that it was going to match every other stereotypical Christian movie I'd ever watched. I tend to steer clear of them unless they're actually accurate and well-made.
However, I quickly found myself laughing at how the main character and my boyfriend's mannerisms were almost identical. The acting shifted along with the dynamic, leaving the viewer laughing one minute and holding their breath throughout the next scene.
Imagine also portrayed some well-known names that many Christian audience members would recognize as Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith. They played an important role in supporting Bart Millard through his journey of writing and performing his breakout hit.
Overall, I encourage you to take a friend and see this film even if they aren't necessarily Christian. This movie doesn't push a religious agenda on the viewer, but simply tells a story of redemption and forgiveness.
Some content may be sensitive to some viewers, though, but I will say that much without spoiling the film.
Through my own personal struggles, I have needed to hear that God can transform and heal beyond my own comprehension. I guarantee that you will laugh, cry, and feel renewed after seeing this movie (I've mentioned him before, but my boyfriend who doesn't usually cry, sobbed with me during the movie.) I'm hoping that more movies like this one are made to show a beautiful story. It won't disappoint!
Final Rating: 10/10 (Would See Again)
