My Favorite Murder is a true crime comedy podcast where two hosts tell the stories of murders that got both national and local attention.
The hosts are comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Hardstark was a food blogger, then gained fame for co-starring on other podcasts. Kilgariff was a writer for the Ellen DeGeneres Show, and head writer for a show featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network.
Kilgariff and Hardstark said that the reason they started this podcast was because of their infatuation of the stories behind how a murder happened. They said in early episodes that their interest probably comes from their mutual fear of dying or being killed.
The My Favorite Murder series is up to 66 episodes and 25 minisodes. A regular episode run time is around an hour to an hour and a half.
The style of the show is more free form, in that the show isn’t strict and to the point. Both hosts tell the story of their favorite murders and then read a fan submitted story of a murder that was in close proximity to them. The show is quirky because they are technically a comedian podcast. Alongside all the murder talk, the laid-back tempo of the hosts created a casual atmosphere. This, in turn, makes the podcast easy to listen to.
My Favorite Murder isn’t the most informational true crime podcast, but it is definitely the most entertaining. It currently sits at number 3 in the comedy podcast section of iTunes. After listening to 10 episodes of My Favorite Murder, I compared it to 10 episodes of another true crime comedy podcast Last Podcast On The Left.
Last Podcast On The Left is more well researched, as it has four hosts and sticks to one topic over the hour and thirty minutes most episodes ran. They also expanded their topics into the occult. One of the episodes I listened to was about Aileen Wuornos, and a few episodes later the subject was the Puerto Rican Chupacabra.
My Favorite Murder falls more in line with ‘I like to hear about the story but also not have it be broken down piece by piece.’ That makes this podcast more entertaining to me.
