New Year, Same Me

Reverse New Year's resolutions.

New Year, Same Me

Five, four, three, two, one….

The room goes wild with excitement as the ball drops in Times Square this New Year’s Eve. Confetti flies, arms raise, and screams echo throughout the crowded room. Some celebrate the excitement of a blank slate, some lament the end of a chapter, while some go straight to sleep as midnight is way past bedtime.

Suddenly, it’s 2016 -- it’s finally time to substitute carrots for carbs and cardio for cake. Not to mention work on that to-do list that stretches longer than the California coast.

To be honest, I’ve given up on New Year’s resolutions all together. Not because I don’t like the idea of newness, adventure and change, but the resolutions always seem to fade by the time February rolls around. The resolutions serve as an added reminder of everything I want to do and be, but never will.

So, my New Year's resolution is to make no New Year's resolution (oops!).

I like the idea of reflecting on the past year’s successes and failures, mountains and valleys, “A” grades and “F” grades. I’m not perfect, and I’m perfectly good at making mistakes, but there’s something to be said about moving forward gracefully.

Each day brings something new, including new opportunities to change. It won’t come on the first of 2016, but over time the small, quiet changes will change me.

So, bear with me.

It’s a new year, same me, but just a change in the making.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
