Being back in good ol' Downingtown, PA from Chicago is the weirdest transition ever. There are some things I've had a hard time getting used to returning to small town living.
1. Everything closes at 10 p.m.
This one is the hardest thing to get used to. My friends and I keep making plans to meet at 9 and them remembering that all of Downingtown is an old lady going to bed at 9 o'clock. Adjusting your schedule to go out at 7 is not something I'm enjoying.
2. You work so much, it shouldn’t be called summer break
Going home means returning to your job. If you work in customer service you know that you work constantly, it doesn't even feel like you're on summer break.
3. Singing in the car is the best thing ever
You're a great singer, but your steering wheel is the only one who appreciates it.
4. Avoiding eye contact when you drive past your high school
Y'all got some history and it didn't end well so it's a little awkward when you run into each other, so you do your best to make sure she doesn't see you.
5. Driving in general
You've been public transiting for so long you forgot how amazing and freeing it is to be driving, especially when you have all the small town backroads to yourself. I think I missed driving the most.
6. Enjoying small town activities with your friends
I remembered that we are surrounded by water, and by that, I mean random lakes and creeks that are more rocks than water.
7. Missing the sound of the train going by
I genuinely cannot sleep anymore, apparently the cta was way more soothing than crickets.
9. Stars!
I missed looking up at the sky while lying beside one of the many rivers here, just looking at the stars. City lights got nothing on stars.
10. Counting the days until you go back
Even though it's great to be home, I got some more damage to do.
