The number 55, created a sense of fear in the opponents of the Atlanta Hawks for periods of four seasons. The player who wore that number, Dikembe Mutombo, controlled the paint, but that number will soon be featured in the rafters at Philips Arena.
The 2015 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductees’ number will be retired in an official ceremony prior to Atlanta's Nov. 24 game against the Boston Celtics according the Hawks official Twitter account.
Mutombo will join fellow Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins and Lou Hudson as well as Bob Pettit as the only Hawks to have their jerseys numbers at such a high honor.
His reign as a defensive presence started when he won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award four different times. Within those four years three of those with the Atlanta Hawks in 1997, 1998, and 2001. He also averaged 9.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks over the course of Mutombo’s 18 year career.
In addition to the Hall of Fame induction and upcoming jersey retirement with Hawks, Denver Post' Christopher Dempsey reported recently that the Denver Nuggets are also planning to have Mutumbo Jersey retired in the 2015-16 campaign.
Dikmebe Mutumbo a.k.a "Mt. Mutumbo" is one of the most iconic figures in NBA history, mainly for his 7'2 frame and famous finger wave after rejecting an opponent’s shot. Mutumbo remains a huge part of the game due to his efforts to expand the sport globally.
Mutumbo has had and will continue to have a great impact on basketball, so it's only right that the Hawks and possibly the Nuggets reward him for his contributions.
