Retail Therapy Is Real

And it is worth every penny.

Retail Therapy Is Real

Boyfriend issues, girl drama, stress over grades… there is no activity that can cure all these ailments better than some well-deserved retail therapy?? Let’s face it girlfriends… in those times of need, there is always that happy shopping place to visit that is extremely comforting (whether it’s in the mall or online). As much as a friend or loved one can help talk you through those not so great times, nothing makes the heart happier than a new pair of shoes or five.

Contrary to popular belief, purchasing material items does change your mood (definitely for the better in most cases). Although is does not mask your pain for the long haul, it most definitely puts in on the back burner while you shuffle through clothing racks or surf various delectable clothing websites. In many cases you may be indulging over retail because of a stupid boy and what better way to fix that than with your girlfriends and some credit cards?? Girlfriends are the most important people to get you through any hard times. Yes, your mom or sister will help you but no human understands like a girlfriend who is basically part of the relationship anyway. They feel your pain, literally, and will never talk you out of buying anything that is guaranteed to secure some temporary happiness.

The best part of retail therapy is the feeling you get when you try on the things you love and you feel like a boss b***h. It makes you realize that no matter what or who you are upset about, you will be okay and you are still perfect (especially in the new outfit). The price of things tend to not matter as much, which is always nice. Am I right? You deserve it, all of it. The fabulous Anthropologies tops, the overpriced jeans from Topshop you shouldn’t indulge in, the adorable Zara jacket, the Gucci bag, anything you want. You actually feel like you may have entered paradise and you deserve to indulge. In that moment it will probably be the only thing that makes you feel better and that is okay. At least until the credit card bill arrives.

Like I said before, it will not mask all the problems that will most likely still bother you in the morning. However, when you put on that new get-up you will feel different. You will feel empowered, as you should. Now I know the retail therapy cure all may seem like a delusional fantasy to most people (especially males) but I can assure that it is real. Anything to get your mind off the things that are hurting you, is worth a try. It just makes it so much better when cute clothes and shoes are assisting you in the recovery process. You can even rationalize that while helping yourself you are also helping the economy and that usually makes it a win win situation… for EVERYONE!! Whatever rationale you use… it most definitely works, I promise!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
