Should we be responding differently to the election results?

There were many, varying responses concerning the outcome of the 2016 election this past week. Some Americans responded with joy, some with fear, and others with violence. Across the nation, we heard about sit-ins, read facebook posts, and engaged in political conversation. Despite the unknown that will inevitably come in our future, my campus has maintained an underlying hope. No matter who students and faculty voted for, we chose to band together and support America's overall decision. Our professors reminded us of our hope in class, peers mentioned it in mass group messages, and family members encouraged us about it from home. It is not something we do not already know about, just something that needs often reminders. No matter who is considered the ruler of our nation, we must remember that God is the ruler of our world, and he put our President elect in a place of power for a specific reason that we do not yet know. In American history, we have had awful Presidents before. Spoiler alert: our nation survived it. We have also had men elected that we felt uneasy about that turned out to be beneficial to the state of our nation. The American public needs to calm down. We as American citizens need to stop freaking out about things we cannot predict and cannot do anything to change at this point in time. These claims are not made to say that we should sit back and passively accept everything our President and government chooses to put into practice or carry out as laws in the coming day. I fully believe that it is still important for us to stand up for our beliefs and fight for those (in a non-violent way, of course). However, the political power has not shifted yet. The same man who was elected 8 years ago still sits in the office today. We are overreacting way before is due. Things ahead are going to look different than they ever have before, but as Christians, we should not be fearful. God has it all figured out, and we are here to make sure we stand for His purpose and His commandments. We should be America's biggest advocates for Truth, Justice, and Hope. Here is a piece of this very hope: we may not know what will happen 20 years from now or even tomorrow, but we know exactly what will happen to us when we come to the end of our lives. We trade this uncertainty now for an eternal certainty, which is a pretty good trade-off. If we do not choose to hold tight to hope in the days to come, no one will.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
